Capture & Paste 0.6.0 update
==========================
Optional local integration with Clipboard History 0.2.0: enable Receive screenshots
from Capture & Paste in Clipboard History and keep both apps running in the same
Windows session. New captures arrive in Images automatically; no old captures are
imported and no shortcut changes are needed. This includes temporary/private
captures. Clipboard History retains its copy independently of clipboard cleanup,
until removed, trimmed or that app quits. Its Off switch pauses the connection.
No new runtime dependencies or background service. Transfers are bounded to one
pending image, 40 million pixels, with a one-second receiver timeout.

Capture & Paste 0.6.0 — 30 September 2026

Selection uses an app-owned white crosshair with a complete 1px pure-black
outline, visible on white and black backgrounds. Its hotspot stays exactly at
the center. It does not change the Windows cursor scheme or captured pixels.

CAPTURE & PASTE 0.6.0 — Windows 10/11 x64
Test · maintained · v0.6.0

THREE MODES
Screenshot is the default on every launch. Press your shortcut, drag a region,
release, then Ctrl+V. No automatic files. Reopen the controls to copy or manually
Save as PNG from the latest preview. Escape or right-click cancels selection.

Multishot keeps numbered, timestamped previews in memory. Capture again whenever
ready. Click a preview to recopy; Save as writes a PNG. Remove/Clear all release
previews, never saved files. Minimize keeps the mode; closing returns to Screenshot.
The collection remains until cleared or quit. Its 256 MiB buffer limit preserves
existing captures and asks you to free space. Three previews appear per page.

Advanced capture offers Rectangle, Window, One monitor and All screens. Delays:
Off, 3, 5 or 10 seconds. The countdown finishes before the screen is captured.
Escape/Cancel stops the countdown. Click a highlighted window/monitor or drag a
rectangle. All screens copies after its delay. The app hides during capture.
Selection shading and the thin yellow border never appear in the result.
Window capture requests the selected window's contents. Protected or hardware-
rendered windows can return blank areas; use Rectangle/One monitor for visible
screen contents. Advanced options persist, but the mode always starts Screenshot.

SAVING
Save as is explicit in every mode. Advanced alone has optional automatic PNG
saving, off by default. Choose an existing folder; timestamped names never replace
another capture. Clipboard and file saving succeed/fail independently. A failed
save retains the clipboard/preview; a failed copy still permits saving/recopying.
The folder applies only to this app, not native Windows screenshot destinations.
Recording, text extraction, freeform selection and annotation/editing are outside
Capture & Paste's permanent scope.

PRINT SCREEN AND SHORTCUTS
Use Settings > Use Print Screen. Its adjacent Windows keyboard settings link
lets you disable Windows' Print Screen screen-capture shortcut if necessary.
The app handles bare Print Screen and suppresses its native clipboard write.
Modifier combinations remain Windows-owned. The app must be running.
Change shortcut accepts other keys/mouse buttons; left/right mouse buttons are
reserved. Other bindings retain their ordinary action in the current app.

CLIPBOARD CLEANUP (OFF BY DEFAULT)
Settings > Remove copied screenshots after 10 minutes excludes new app copies
from Windows history/sync and clears only the app's exact still-current copy.
Anything copied afterward is left alone. Recopy starts a fresh timer. Keep the
app running; sleep delays cleanup until wake. Turning it off or quitting cancels
pending cleanup. Saved files, previews, pasted copies, existing history entries
and third-party clipboard managers are unaffected. This is not secure erasure.

INSTALL
Run CaptureAndPaste-0.6.0-Setup-Windows-x64.exe. Choose a writable installation
folder and whether to create desktop and Start menu shortcuts. Installation
is for your Windows account and does not request administrator rights.
Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps includes Capture & Paste and Uninstall.
It does not register as an image-file opener under Default apps.

PORTABLE
Extract the complete portable ZIP into a permanent, writable folder and run
CaptureAndPaste.exe. Keep your existing button.json and preferences.json when
upgrading: the portable download contains neither file.
Quit any older Snap or Crop & Paste 0.1.0 process before starting 0.6.0: older
versions do not participate in the new single-instance mechanism.

RUNNING
Opening the executable again brings the same window forward. Closing keeps the
app in the tray. Quit stops it. Installed/portable copies share one instance in
the Windows user session; quit before switching copies.

PREFERENCES
Light, Light Gray, Dark and Pitch Black / OLED use the shared family design. New
users start with Light Gray; saved themes and bindings are retained.
Portable: button.json and preferences.json sit beside CaptureAndPaste.exe.
Installed: these files sit in %APPDATA%\CropAndPaste. On first launch an
existing button.json/preferences.json beside the installed executable is
copied only when its per-user counterpart does not already exist.
To move from another portable folder, quit the app, copy your two preference
files into %APPDATA%\CropAndPaste, then open the installed app. Copy only files
that exist; an unconfigured portable copy may have neither file.
Uninstall removes the application and its shortcuts, and retains preferences.

LICENCE
The original application and build/support code are MIT licensed: free to
use, modify and redistribute, including commercially, with the required
copyright and licence notice retained. See LICENSE. Dependencies and Python
keep their own notices in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES. Buildable source is available
alongside the download at https://crop.andrazdjuric.com/.

BUILD FROM SOURCE
Extract the source ZIP preserving apps/crop-and-paste and shared/ beside it.
On Windows with Python 3.12 x64, run apps\crop-and-paste\BUILD_EXE.bat.
This installs pinned dependencies into .venv-build and produces the one-file
dist\CaptureAndPaste.exe. Packaged users do not need Python installed.

To also build and verify the installer, from apps\crop-and-paste in PowerShell:
  .\.venv-build\Scripts\python.exe package-release.py --prepare-installer
  & 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Inno Setup 6\ISCC.exe' /DAppVersion=0.6.0 installer.iss
  .\smoke-windows.ps1
  .\.venv-build\Scripts\python.exe package-release.py --source-commit COMMIT_SHA
Adjust the compiler path if Inno Setup is installed elsewhere. Use the pinned
compiler selected in the repository Windows workflow for official releases.
COMMIT_SHA is the full Git source revision you built; official CI supplies it
through GITHUB_SHA. Final packaging requires a passing Windows smoke report.
Run smoke-windows.ps1 only on a disposable Windows test account: it deliberately
tests capture, save, Print Screen, install/uninstall and refuses an existing Capture & Paste installation or
existing per-user CropAndPaste preference directory. It leaves release logs.

RELEASE STANDING
These are unsigned builds. Automated release checks exercise real packaged
Windows processes and installation; they are not a hands-on capture/paste,
multi-monitor/DPI or physical-device verification. The original Snap executable
was tested by the owner. See manifest.json and the release record for evidence.

The header offers Light Gray and Dark. Settings retains all four themes. Saved preferences remain unchanged.

RENAME COMPATIBILITY
The installer upgrades Crop & Paste in place, retaining its destination and
preferences. The AppData directory keeps its old name for compatibility.
Portable users should quit the old app, copy button.json and preferences.json
to the new CaptureAndPaste folder, then retire the old executable themselves.

0.5.0 refinement
---------------
Advanced uses a thin movable capture toolbar; Home stays compact. Rectangle,
Window and One monitor can be selected immediately with No delay. Choose a delay
then Capture to prepare the live screen before selection. All screens waits for
Capture. Escape/Close cancels. The toolbar/countdown are never saved in captures.
Saving preferences are in Settings. Screenshot remains the default each launch.

Include capture metadata in saved PNGs is OFF by default. When enabled, saved PNGs
contain only acquisition time in UTC, app version and capture type. No username,
computer name, paths, URLs, window titles or location are embedded. Recopy/Save as
retain the original capture time. Clipboard bitmaps contain no capture metadata.
Image dimensions/encoding, timestamp filenames and OS file dates are separate.
Other applications control metadata in their own pasted/saved output.

Fresh installation creates a desktop shortcut by default; Start menu is off.
Both choices remain selectable; upgrades remember previous shortcut choices.
The unchecked taskbar-help option explains how to pin the running app manually.
Start with Windows is off by default, available in Settings for installed copies,
and starts quietly in the tray. Uninstall removes this installation's startup
registration. Windows Startup settings can independently disable it.
